Interview to Helen R. Davis, author of the book Athena.

How much time have you been writing? Why did you start writing?

I started writing in college when I was assigned projects for the Spanish degree I was taking at the time.  I began to expand into writing fiction on my own.

Why did you decide to write science fiction?

Science fiction and fantasy are mediums that sometimes allow us to say what cannot be said in a world as charged as today’s world is.  I have also been a fan of science fiction growing up and my childhood goal was to be an astronaut, not an author.

Who are the writers that inspire you? And why?

Michelle Moran is a good author that writes novels set in ancient Egypt and France which both ingrigue me. Her first three novels, about Nefertiti, Nefertari, and Cleopatra Selene, daughter of Cleopatra, were amazing reads. The Second Empress really brought Napoleon’s forgotten second wife, Marie Louise, to life.

How should we begin to read this book?

Athena is an apocalyptic dark fantasy that shows the result of not learning from the past and a dark future that could be if actions are not taken. 

What is the most important thing for you in a book?

A book that I can enjoy and also one that is a good time read.

What can we find in this book?

Athena is a fantasy story, but it is also a tale of how to overcome tyranny. It also tells us we cannot face tyranny alone or do things completely by ourselves

Can you tell us about your writing process? What’s a typical writing day for you?

Each day is different. Some days I promote my works and others I write on them.

Why should we read Athena?

Read Athena for an interesting story and also to think of what could be if Western style democracies  and republics become a thing of the past.

Do you have any new Projects?

My current project, requested by my publisher in Honolulu, is tentatively titled CLEOPATRA’S GRANDDAUGHTER. This will be book 3 in the CLEOPATRA-REIMAGINED series which takes an alternate history scenario in which Antony and Cleopatra, rather than Augustus Caesar, triumph at the Battle of Actium. CLEOPATRA’S GRANDDAUGHTER will cover the life of the fictional princess Cleopatra IX, daughter of Cleopatra Selene II, daughter of the famous Cleopatra.  It will cover the years approximately 2 B.C till 30. A.D. and will imagine the birth of Christianity in an Egypto-Roman, rather than purely Roman, empire. If you are a fan of Michelle Moran’s ‘Cleopatra’s Daughter’ you will love the Cleopatra Re-Imagined Series!

How would you define your experience with Calíope editorial?

I have been very pleased with this publisher but I am hoping for wider distribution and sales in the future.
